The Victory at Trafalgar Watercolour by Gregory Robinson, c.1920

This fine watercolour shows HMS Victory heading in to battle at Trafalgar, still perhaps Britain’s most celebrated naval engagement and subject of a large number of paintings and watercolours, both contemporary and later re-imaginings. The artist learnt his trade studying the rigging of the vessels and this is obvious in the way that the features of the vessels have been delineated. The artist’s palette is very similar to that used by the likes of Montagu Dawson in the same period and this is an attractive and atmospheric portrayal of this famous event.
