TheArtOfAGhost - Mors Amata Mea III (Anatomy of Emotion series) -XL

A female figure wrapped in a long cloak bends toward a seated skeleton, supporting its skull in her hands. The gesture is delicate, measured, almost solemn. The woman's face moves closer to the skull in a moment of silent intimacy, in which the distance between presence and absence seems to dissolve. In Mors Amata Mea III, death becomes the symbolic place of a relationship. The female figure seems to recognize in the skeleton something that remains beyond the transformation of the body: a trace, a memory, a presence that preserves its meaning even when every form of life has been consumed. Her gesture contains a deeply human question: what remains of a bond when time has taken away everything that was visible? The composition develops on a matte black background, built with whites and grays that emerge from the darkness. The woman’s cloak unfolds in broad, sinuous folds, enveloping the figure in a sequence of movements that heighten its almost ritual presence. The skeleton, instead, emerges through an austere and fragmented painterly matter, in which the artist’s characteristic splotches render the vulnerability of the bone structure. The contrast between the cloak’s fluidity and the anatomical rawness creates a visual tension that runs through the entire work. I wanted to focus attention on an essential gesture: two hands supporting a cranium. It is in this simplicity that the scene finds its intensity. The woman does not appear overwhelmed by the presence of death; her attitude suggests a deep familiarity, a closeness that belongs to an inner dimension. Her lowered face, gathered posture, and the delicacy of the contact transform the image into a reflection on emotional memory and the persistence of bonds. The title Mors Amata Mea, translatable from Latin as “My beloved death,” captures this emotional ambiguity. Death takes on an intimate dimension, entering a territory where love, loss, and awareness of existence meet. Its meaning unfolds through the relationship between the figures, leaving the viewer the possibility of recognizing in it a personal memory, a cherished feeling, or the need to maintain a bond with what belongs to the past. The work is part of Anatomy of Emotion, a series dedicated to investigating the invisible structures of human experience. In this journey, the body and its transformations become tools to explore memory, vulnerability, and the complexity of affections. The anatomical figure thus acquires psychological and symbolic value, while the painterly matter helps render tangible what, by its nature, defies representation. Artist Biography Simone Pappalardo, known in the art scene by the name TheArtOfAGhost, is an Italian contemporary artist whose research focuses on the investigation of human emotions and the power of visual symbolism. His practice develops through a strongly personal painting, in which matter, atmosphere, and psychological dimension become tools to explore the deepest aspects of inner experience. His works have entered private collections in several European countries, including Italy, France, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Greece, Spain, Portugal, Germany, Belgium, Poland, Austria, the Netherlands, and Hungary, contributing to the gradual diffusion of his research within the international emerging contemporary art scene. Through his neo-expressionist and symbolic language, TheArtOfAGhost explores the most intimate zones of the psyche, giving shape to enigmatic presences, anatomical figures, and images charged with emotional tension. His work is distinguished by expressive use of contrast, the depth of dark backgrounds, and a material exploration that gives the painting surface a fundamental role in constructing meaning.
