Theodor Hilsdorf (1868-1944): Portrait of an 80-year-old with photo studio stamp Photogr. Atelier Friedr. Müller, Owner: Theodor Hilsdorf, Munich, Amalienstraße 18. Format approx. 15.5 x 11 cm. On mount board. Edges more sharply defined. On the back of the board, probably in another hand, dated and titled in pencil. In the manner of his famous portraits of George, Lechter, etc. Theodor Hilsdorf (born June 18, 1868 in Bingen; died 1944) was a German photographer. From the Bavarian Prince Regent Luitpold, in 1905 he was granted the title “Royal Bavarian Court Photographer.” He became the business partner of Friedrich Müller and specialized in large-format sepia portraits, with which he was also represented at international exhibitions. After the death of his father-in-law in 1903, Theodor Hilsdorf took over his Munich studio, which existed under the name Friedrich Müller-Hilsdorf until his death in 1944. In 1905 he was appointed Royal Bavarian Court Photographer by Prince Regent Luitpold. By the end of the war in 1945, the studios were destroyed and much of the photographer’s 100,000 negatives were destroyed. Today, besides developed photographs, fewer than 2,000 of Theodor Hilsdorf’s glass plates remain, kept in the Photography Collection of the Munich City Museum.
