Typed letter signed Theodore Roosevelt as President, dated February 11, 1908, on White House stationery marked "Personal." Addressed to Mrs. Sarah A. Marford of New Britain, Connecticut, Roosevelt responds to her recollections of a severe storm and a tent being swept out to sea. Roosevelt writes, "I was not ten years old, I was only about five years old, but I do just dimly remember the awful storm and the tent going out to sea." He thanks her for writing and for a handmade memento she sent him. Included is Mrs. Marford's handwritten letter to Roosevelt, in which she identifies herself as 95 years old and recalls knowing his father's family during his childhood at Long Branch, New Jersey. She describes attending fairs at the local Reformed Church and offers to send Roosevelt a small handmade pincushion and bag. The correspondence provides a personal glimpse into Roosevelt's childhood memories and his willingness, while serving as President, to respond to an elderly acquaintance of his family. Includes the original White House mailing envelope, postmarked Washington, February 11, 1908. The letter exhibits toning, original folds and a vertical separation extending upward from the lower edge. The accompanying correspondence and envelope show age-related wear. Estimate $600 - $1,000
