Three Ancient Roman Black Glass Bracelet Bangles

Roman, Imperial period. Three ancient glass bangles of plain annular form, each drawn from a single rod of dark glass, bent to a circle and fused at the join, with rounded outer profiles and fine tooling ridges on one example. The glass reads as opaque black in reflected light, a density produced by heavy metallic oxide loading, and the surfaces carry silver, blue, and violet iridescence developed over long burial. Bangles of this kind were worn in multiples on the wrist or upper arm and were produced in quantity at glassworking centres along the Levantine coast. Item # 204554
