At the beginning of the Republic of China, he served as the director of the Yongjia Foreign Broadcasting Bureau. Paying Homage to Deities Executed in elaborate brushwork and meticulous detail, the painting depicts a lively religious procession centred on a courtyard. In the foreground, performers in traditional robes walk on tall stilts, while behind them, participants carrying ritual implements and banners proceed in procession. Their robes bear the inscription ‘chaoding jinxiang (朝頂進香),’ referring to the practice of ascending a mountain to offer incense before the deities at a temple to pray for safety and protection. Unsigned and undated, compositions of this kind are found in Chinese paintings dating to the late nineteenth century and were also popular in the export market.
