TIBETAN TANGKA DEPICTING THE 100 BARDO DEITIES

Ca. 19th century AD > A Tibetan thangka depicting a central blue, multi-armed wrathful deity within a flaming aureole, surrounded by subsidiary figures and five circular deity assemblies. The densely populated composition is rendered in red, ochre, green and blue against contrasting dark and green grounds, with smaller figures arranged between the principal groups. The subject relates to the Nyingma Buddhist tradition of the hundred peaceful and wrathful deities, associated with teachings on the bardo, the intermediate state between death and rebirth. These figures represent manifestations of awakened awareness, their peaceful and fierce appearances expressing different aspects of enlightenment. > > Size: 560mm x 450mm; Weight: 370g > Provenance: Private London Collection; Ex.
