TIBETAN TANGKA DEPICTING VAJRAPANI

TIBETAN TANGKA DEPICTING VAJRAPANI

Ca. 17th - 18th century AD > A Tibetan thangka depicting Vajrapani in wrathful form, standing within a flame aureole against a landscape ground. Subsidiary figures occupy the surrounding field, and the painting retains a textile mounting. Vajrapani, whose name means Vajra-in-Hand, embodies the power of awakened activity and protects Buddhist teachings. His wrathful form makes this protective energy visible: flames, forceful movement and a fierce expression convey the subduing of obstacles rather than uncontrolled anger. > > Size: 1070mm x 780mm; Weight: 580g > Provenance: Private London Collection; Ex. Private UK Collection. > >
