Tile (30) - Manganese - Makkum - 1970-1980 - Manganese Corner Decor

30 vintage Makkum wall tiles – manganese corner decoration – 3 landscape tiles – approx. 1960–1975 Description A special and coherent lot of 30 Dutch wall tiles from Makkum, executed in white glazed earthenware with a characteristic manganese/purple Old-Hollandic corner ornament. The lot consists of 27 white tiles with a corner decoration and 3 decorated tiles with finely worked architectural and landscape scenes. The motifs include churches, towers, houses and rural buildings. When the tiles are placed side by side, the corner ornaments visually align and form a beautiful repeating pattern. The three landscape tiles can be incorporated as decorative accents, making this lot particularly suitable for assembling a historic-tolk tile field or tableau. On the back of many tiles there is a pressed oval MAKKUM factory mark. The execution and back marks point to production in the second half of the 20th century, probably around 1960–1975, when traditional Dutch tile motifs were revived. Details * Quantity: 30 tiles * 27 white tiles with manganese corner ornament * 3 tiles with architecture/landscape decoration * Origin: Makkum, Netherlands * Period: approx. 1960–1975 * Material: glazed earthenware/ceramics * Decoration color: manganese/purple * All tiles with pressed MAKKUM factory mark * Size: approx. 13 × 13 cm per tile Condition The tiles are in relatively neat vintage condition for their age. The glazed front sides generally present well. Not all tiles are completely clean. On the backs of several pieces there are still residues of old grout, adhesive and/or mounting material. Furthermore, small signs of aging and use are scattered, including light soiling, small edge and corner damage, glaze irregularities and other minor imperfections. These signs of wear are appropriate for the age and previous installation of the tiles. The overall appearance of the tile field is well-kept and decorative. An attractive large and cohesive lot of Makkum wall tiles with traditional Old-Hollandic decoration, interesting for collectors but also very suitable for reuse in an interior, fireplace, kitchen or decorative tile project. The photos show the tiles actually offered and form an integral part of the description.
