Set of cobalt blue-decorated faience tiles from Portugal/Spain with birds, animals, and floral motifs – 18th/19th century Beautiful and charming collection of antique faience tiles, hand-painted in cobalt blue on white tin glaze, characteristic of the ceramic tradition of the old Portugal/Spain, from the 18th/19th century. Type: Wall or fireplace surround tiles. Dimensions of each tile: 14.3×14.3 cm (thickness 1.1 cm) Decor: Rich varied iconographic motifs including flying or perched birds, stylized floral compositions, and a particularly sought-after subject depicting a running hare. The corners are adorned with the traditional geometric or floral motifs of the period (so-called “ox-head” motifs or small flowers). Technique: Grand feu decoration in blue monochrome, brilliant tin glaze. Back and edges: Rough edges and terracotta back showing traces of original mortar/lime, confirming their authentic ancient deposition. Overall condition: Good authenticity condition for excavated or depot pieces. Signs of wear: Minor nicks, superficial chips on edges and corners, natural crazing of the glaze and wear consistent with age. No masking or modern restoration.
