Malo-les-Bains is a seaside resort in the north of France, in the Hauts-de-France region, located on the territory of Dunkerque. From 1891 to 1969 it was an independent municipality; afterwards it merged with its “large” neighbour, with which it now forms a district. It has a little over 16,000 permanent residents. Malo-les-Bains derives its name from Gaspard Malo (1804-1884), son of a Napoleonic privateer, shipowner, who contributed to the urbanisation of the resort. The greatest asset of Malo-les-Bains is its beach of about 4 km on the North Sea, which was one of the locations of Operation Dynamo in 1940 (the evacuation of British troops after the German breakthrough). Today a dyke runs along it, partially reserved for pedestrians; the beach and the adjacent residential areas, ideal for lounging, watersports and relaxing walks. Before enjoying the pleasures of doing nothing and watersports, a walk to discover the heritage is a must. Along the dyke, which separates the beach from the urban part of the spa town, the striking 19th-century villas stand out (some listed), which, despite their varying styles, together form an elegant architectural whole. Another heritage symbol of Malo-les-Bains are the dozens of colorful beach huts where people once dressed before heading onto the sand…
