Tito Schipa - Foto autografata 1962

This vintage photographic portrait shows the famous tenor Tito Schipa, universally acclaimed as the greatest 'graceful tenor' in the history of world opera and a cornerstone of the most important international theaters, from the Metropolitan in New York to the Chicago Civic Opera. The historical value of the work lies in the original autograph signed by himself on the mount of the photo, traced with a dark vintage ink that is clear, fluent, and perfectly preserved. The dedication clearly reads the affectionate formula 'To dear friend Vito Russo with affection Tito Schipa 1962'. This explicit dating represents an exceptional chronological detail for collectors: dating to the artist's last years of life (he passed away in 1965), it constitutes a late, rare testimony from a period when the tenor had drastically reduced public appearances and granted his autograph only to a very small circle. What makes this memorabilia unique is precisely the nature of the dedication, addressed to Vito Russo, a prominent musician and figure included in the elite artistic circuits of Naples at that time. The exchange is not a simple autograph for a casual admirer, but the tangible document of a mutual regard between professionals of music. The photo comes from the private archive of this authoritative insider of the operatic milieu, whose significance is confirmed by the presence in the same collection of historic contemporary signatures of Maria Meneghini Callas. With its excellent original contrasts, intact margins, and traceable artistic provenance, this autographed photo represents a record of absolute significance for any archive collection dedicated to the history of Italian opera.
