TN-14a. March 25, 1815. Act of February 24, 1815. $10 Double Signature

A Rarity Dating to the Immediate Aftermath of the War of 1812 TN-14a. March 25, 1815. Act of February 24, 1815. $10 Double Signature Remainder. PMG Very Fine 30. No. None. Plate G. Distributed after the Treaty of Ghent was made effective, bidders have here for their consideration an unissued Treasury Note issued under legislation dated February 24, 1815. Now this particular example represents the second-lowest denomination from this emission, but it nonetheless stands as a historically significant item whose history is spoken to by Nicholas J. Bruyer in his landmark reference U.S. Treasury Notes 1812 - 1865: An Illustrated History. The Bruyer text states that the $5s were the first denomination delivered to the Treasury Department from Philadelphia and also goes into succinct detail about the signing process. Samuel Clarke and Edward Fox were among those that worked to sign these notes, and each had received a commission from the President. Clarke was a naval officer and merchant and was later made Acting Treasury Secretary after Albert Gallatin left the post in 1814. Fox an Irishman by birth, fled Ireland and held a chain of financial positions in America including a stint as Cashier of the Bank of Pennsylvania from its inception in 1793 to 1810. These men were nonetheless paid for their services and were initially paid a fee of $1.25 per hundred notes signed, but that was later reduced to $0.75 per hundred in 1815. Historical context aside, bidders have here a truly rare opportunity for their consideration as these notes are rarely encountered at all with or without signatures. PMG comments "Pinholes." Estimate: $5,000 - $7,000. Click here for certification details from PMG.
