Beautiful, probably an 18th-century copper tobacco tin with various scenes. My interpretation of what is on the box: Front top likely the date 1-1-29 for 1729? Below it on the right a male/holy figure extending his hand to a man on the left with a travelers’ staff/pilgrim’s staff. This scene depicts a biblical or spiritual encounter, possibly the surrender to faith or a soul meeting Christ/Church. In the middle the old Dutch text reads - Tot hem Koome / ende syde siet / het lam Gods (in modern Dutch - Come to Him, and See at His Word the Lamb of God) In the center - a lamb (sheep) walking across a hilly landscape. The creature carries a crusader’s staff over its shoulder. This is the classic Christian iconography of the AGNUS DEI (the Lamb of God). The symbol for Jesus Christ who has conquered death. At the bottom appears the World or the bread. This stands for earthly life or creation over which the Lamb of God watches. The accompanying text is hard to read (part rubbed/erased). On the side is depicted the long hunt with, in my view, a dog, deer, and hunter. On the other side, at the top - Luke 2:16; this refers to the second chapter of the Gospel according to Luke, verse 16. The text below reads (to my knowledge) "ende sy quamen met haste ende vonden" which is a direct quotation from the then State Bible translation of Luke 2:16: "And they came with haste and found Mary, Joseph, and the child lying in the manger." In the middle shows the lying baby with a radiant halo (Nimbus) around the head, lying in a bed of straw, with the text Leggin in /liggen in referring to placing the child in the manger. At the bottom The Holy Trinity - a prominent triangle (the all-seeing eye or the triangle). - The meaning of this is - In Christian art the equilateral triangle symbolizes the Holy Trinity - unity of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. On one side the solder in the middle section has come loose (see photos). See photos; these are an important part of the description. Shipping = Registered
