Tobacco jar - Wood - Tobacco shop Willem III period

Antique wooden tobacco jar – Willem III period – turned wood with black-finished bands – 19th century A particularly characterful Dutch wooden tobacco jar from the 19th century, executed in beautifully turned wood and presumably dating from the Willem III period, circa 1860–1890. King William III reigned from 1849 to 1890. In Dutch decorative arts and furniture, the second half of the 19th century is often referred to as the Willem III period. Comparable turned wooden Dutch tobacco jars are dated around 1860–1880 and around 1880 and fall within the collecting field of so-called treenware: utilitarian objects largely made of turned wood. This tobacco jar has a powerful, almost architectural construction with broad turned profiles and alternating natural wood and black-finished, ebonized bands. The warm honey to reddish-brown wood color contrast particularly beautifully with the dark black. The loose lid visually forms the high point. It is built up from several stepped turned discs and is crowned by an ornamental baluster-shaped knob with a black-finished end cap. The whole gives the jar the monumental appearance so characteristic of decorative objects from the second half of the 19th century. Wooden tobacco jars were used to store loose tobacco indoors. The well-fitting lid helped protect the contents from dust and drying out. Comparable Dutch specimens from the 19th century are known with a fully turned wooden construction, profiled rings and a removable lid with a turned knob. Characteristics * Object: antique tobacco jar / tobacco can * Origin: probably the Netherlands * Period: second half of the 19th century * Dating: presumably circa 1860–1890 * Era: Willem III period * Material: turned wood * Natural warm-brown wood combined with black-finished parts * Strongly profiled cylindrical model * Removable lid * Beautiful multi-part turned lid * Baluster-shaped knob with black crown * Wooden interior * Not marked as far as visible * Fine old patina Condition The tobacco jar is in an authentic antique condition with clear signs of age and use. In particular, the lid shows several pronounced dryness and shrinkage cracks. Around the attachment of the turned knob there are also cracks and old signs of use. Also in the body, including at the bottom and through one of the black-finished bands, there are age cracks. The surface also shows scratches, wear, discolorations and localized loss of the black finish. The turned profiles and the decorative construction remain well recognizable despite these signs of age. These signs match the object's age and give the tobacco jar a distinctly well-used 19th-century appearance. Usage marks see photos. The photos are an important part of the condition description. A particularly decorative example of 19th-century Dutch turned wood work, attractive to collectors of antique smoking paraphernalia, treenware, folk art and interior objects from the Willem III period.
