Togo 2022 – 1500 Francs CFA – Ginevra de’ Benci – 1/200 oz Gold Country: Togo Year: 2022 Denomination: 1500 Francs CFA Material: .999 fine gold Weight: 1/200 troy oz (approx. 0.1555 g) Diameter: 40 mm Quality: Proof Certificate number: 00950 Obverse: The national emblem of the Togolese Republic, consisting of the shield flanked by two lions and the national motto Travail – Liberté – Patrie. The inscription RÉPUBLIQUE TOGOLAISE appears around the upper part, with the year 2022 and denomination 1500 FRANCS CFA below. Reverse: A detailed interpretation of Leonardo da Vinci's famous portrait of Ginevra de’ Benci. The sitter occupies the centre of the composition, surrounded by decorative geometric elements. To the left is a small medallion depicting Leonardo da Vinci, accompanied by his name and the dates 1452–1519. The inscription GINEVRA DE’ BENCI appears prominently above the portrait. Leonardo da Vinci's portrait of Ginevra de’ Benci is generally dated to circa 1474–1478 and belongs to the earliest surviving portraits by the Renaissance master. Ginevra was a young member of a prominent Florentine family, and Leonardo portrayed her against a dense background of juniper. The Italian word for juniper, ginepro, forms an intentional visual association with her name. The original painting is today preserved in the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. Remarkably, it is the only painting by Leonardo da Vinci in the Americas. This modern Togolese gold issue combines a very small quantity of fine gold with an unusually large diameter of 40 mm, allowing the Renaissance portrait to be reproduced on a much larger visual scale. It was issued as part of a series devoted to celebrated works by Leonardo da Vinci. The coin is accompanied by certificate of authenticity no. 00950 and a technical information leafle
