Today I strive to make these two worlds coexist, and I work with original 35mm film stock from movies in pop artworks using a process I call analog pixel art, where each 35mm cell resembles a pixel in order to rediscover light in this digital, dematerialized world. PIXEL PROJECT 35 Pixel Project 35 is a protocol that explores the meeting point between two foundational image technologies: analog cinema film and the digital pixel. Each work is built from a grid where each module takes the exact dimensions of a 35 mm film frame (35 × 19 mm). This grid, created digitally, forms a deliberately pixelated image where each square becomes the contemporary equivalent of a photogram. Within this structure, some pixels disappear to make space for real 35 mm film cells from the depicted film. Backlit, these authentic fragments become light points that reintroduce the materiality of cinema at the heart of a digital image. This series continues the Analog Digital Cooperation project, but reverses the principle. Whereas previous works used film stock exclusively as the material for constructing the image, Pixel Project 35 has two representation systems dialogue. The digital pixel adopts the proportions of the film frame, while the actual photogram is naturally integrated into the composition as a living pixel. The work thus oscillates between abstraction and figuration. Seen up close, it fragments into a mosaic of geometric shapes and color fields, where reading the image gives way to an almost abstract composition. As the gaze moves away, these fragments gradually recombine to reveal the subject as a whole. This scale variation invites the viewer to physically experience the image: abstraction arises from proximity, while the figure appears with distance. This shift in perception recalls cinema itself, where a sequence of still images produces the illusion of movement. The backlit cells play a particular role in this experience. They are not merely a light source; they are genuine fragments of the original film, bearing material and historical memory. Each work thus contains an authentic part of the cinematic object from which it originates. Pixel Project 35 thus questions how images traverse technologies, moving from photosensitive matter to digital language, while preserving their power of representation. The series continues the reflection started by Analog Digital Cooperation on the coexistence of analog and digital, no longer in opposition but in a collaboration where each medium reveals and complements the other.
