He won the Tour de France for five consecutive years (1991 to 1995 — the only one to achieve it consecutively) and the Giro d’Italia on two consecutive occasions (1992 and 1993); in addition, he was the world champion in individual pursuit (1995), Olympic pursuit champion (1996) and holder of the hour record (1994) for two months. Because of his palmarès, he was part of the Inaugural Session of the UCI Hall of Fame in 2002, and was considered the eighth-best cyclist of the Tour de France according to a jury of five French specialists chosen by the Tour organization itself. He was awarded two Golden Bicycles.
