He is regarded as the best Spanish cyclist of all time and one of the greatest athletes in the country’s history, highlighting his willingness to sacrifice and his knack for winning. He has received various awards in recognition of his sporting career, notably the Prince of Asturias Award for Sports in 1992. He won the Tour de France for five consecutive years (1991–1995)—the only one to achieve it consecutively—and the Giro d’Italia twice in a row (1992 and 1993); he was also the world individual time trial champion (1995), Olympic individual time trial champion (1996), and holder of the hour record (1994) for two months. Additionally, he added several stage races of a week and one-day classics to his palmarès, notably the Volta a Catalunya (1988, 1991 and 1992), Paris–Nice (1989 and 1990), the Clásica de San Sebastián (1990), the Spanish Road National Championship (1992) and the Dauphiné Libéré (1995 and 1996), highlighting especially in the time-trial stages to secure those victories, while also being one of the best climbers on the cycling scene. Thanks to his palmarès, he was part of the Inaugural Session of the UCI Hall of Fame in 2002, and was regarded as the eighth-best cyclist in the Tour de France according to a jury of five French specialists chosen by the Tour organization itself. He was awarded two Golden Bicycles.
