Trilobite - Fossil carapace - Hollardops Mesocristatus - 9.5 cm

In this lot we offer sizeable trilobites of the Hollardops Mesocristatus species in matrix in a flight position, with an impressive arched posture. Full size of the piece: 9.5 cm, the animal’s body measures 6 cm, though it would measure a bit more in a fully extended posture. Perfect preservation, perfect eye quality. It is an exquisite piece, very aesthetic and decorative, worked using a sandblasting technique. It comes from mines in the Oufaten Mountain, Tinghir Province. (Morocco). One of the reasons the Hollardops genus is fascinating to collectors is the variety of species found in Morocco. To identify the different species, special attention should be paid to eye size, the number of lenses, and the shape of the cephalon and pygidium (the latter body part can greatly aid identification), number of segments, size of spines, etc. Often, the anatomical differences between species can be very subtle, and only the most attentive eyes can distinguish them. In paleontology, the study of trilobites is a broad and exclusive discipline; it’s a whole world. The specimen is accompanied by an L-shaped acrylic stand for display as a gift
