Tuscaloosa, Alabama. $5 1902 Plain Back. Fr. 608. The City NB. Charter #6173. PMG Very Fine 25. Home to the University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa is surprisingly a tough prospect for National Bank Notes. Served by both the Merchants National Bank (Charter# 3678) and the City National Bank (Charter# 6173) which organized in 1902 roughly 15 years after its counterpart, the National Bank Note Census surprisingly only records notes on the latter with 75 non-institutional pieces recorded. Those pieces are surprisingly scarce at auction and can likely be chalked up to the fact that Nationals from SEC college towns are incredibly popular with collectors making this evenly circulated $5 Plain Back graced with the signatures of Cashier Frank S. Daniel and President Robert Hunt Cochrane an opportunity to be had. Estimate: $800 - $1,200. Click here for certification details from PMG.
