TWO GREATER INDUS PAINTED POTTERY JARS

TWO GREATER INDUS PAINTED POTTERY JARS

Ca. 2500–2000 BC. A group of two wheel-made pottery vessels associated with the ceramic traditions of Baluchistan and the Greater Indus region. The first has a rounded body and tall concave neck, with a broad geometric band of opposed triangles and hatched motifs encircling the lower body. The second is a squat jar with a short cylindrical neck and everted rim, painted in dark brown and reddish pigment over a warm terracotta ground. Its shoulder carries a continuous frieze of stylised animals or birds separated by groups of vertical lines and framed by horizontal bands. A secondary register of pendant loop motifs decorates the upper body beneath the principal frieze. Size: 110-130mm x 120-120mm; Weight: 555g Provenance: Private London collection; acquired in Belgium; formerly in a German private collection before 2000.
