Two-leaf devotional shrine window (jharokha) - Wood - India - Early

Extraordinary devotional item, traditionally used as a wall shrine (jharokha) or sanctuary niche. The piece consists of two hinged doors with wrought iron elements and a central finely carved and painted mullion/bolt with geometric and floral motifs. The external surfaces of the two doors feature a richly narrative figurative painting inspired by Hindu/Himalayan mythology. The paintings, executed with extraordinary precision, depict winged deities, divine figures on mythological mounts (vaahana such as the Makara and celestial elephants), warriors and fantastical beings immersed in a stylized landscape of rocks and vegetation, topped by a delicate frieze of volutes. The back of the doors is decorated with a refined and essential floral composition in a stylized cross. The work is supplied with a handmade supporting frame designed to ensure optimal wall display. Type: Two-leaf devotional window/sanctuary (jharokha) Display support: Supplied with a handmade containment frame Origin: North India / Rajasthan - Popular devotional painting / Miniature inspired by Rajput-Himalayan traditions Period: First half of the 20th century (c. 1920–1950) Materials: Hand-painted wood with natural pigments, locking elements and wrought iron hinges Overall dimensions: Height: 63 cm Width: 64 cm Depth: 6.5 cm Weight: 5 kg Condition: Excellent overall state of preservation.
