«Ueno Shinobazu Bentendō Kaichō no Zu» (上野不忍弁財天開帳之図)...

This print is the left panel of a famous Japanese triptych from the Meiji period titled *Ueno Shinobazu Bentendō Kaichō no Zu* (上野不忍弁財天開帳之図), which depicts the public opening of the Bentendō Temple at Ueno’s Shinobazu Pond. It was created by the artist Yōsai Nobukazu (楊斎延一) and originally published in 1899. • The Temple Gate: The oval green sign crowning the stone entrance reads *Shōryūmon* (笑龍門), poetically translated as the "Smiling Dragon Gate." The upper structure features a pavilion in vibrant red tones, displaying architectural ornamentation typical of the late 19th century. • The Women's Attire: The group of women walking in a line wears the classic uniform of Meiji-era female students (*jogakusei*). They are dressed in a combination of a kimono and a purple or burgundy *hakama* (traditional pleated divided skirt)—a style that symbolized the transition toward modernity and women's education in Japan at the time. • The Figure in the Foreground: In the bottom-left corner, a man is seen from behind, dressed in a formal black kimono, a *haori* coat bearing a family crest (*mon*), and striped *hakama*; he holds a folding fan as he watches the procession.
