Undated (ca. 1652-1674) St. Patrick Farthing. Martin 7b.1-Ea.2, W-11500. Rarity-5. Copper. Large 8 Below King. VF-30 (PCGS). CAC. 98.7 grains. Smooth medium to deep brown surfaces show some nice gloss. The splasher is large and misshapen, involving the right half of the crown, King David's head, and even the letter R in REX; it has toned to a dark charcoal-olive gold color and has some light verdigris. Centering is good on a rather choice, round planchet that is free of significant defects. Moderately, yet evenly worn with all major design elements bold, the curious digit 8 below the king is fully defined and clear. Really a nice coin in a St. Patrick farthing, a type that often comes quite retched. The Large 8 Below King attribution adds further appeal, especially since this variety is seen on only three obverse dies. Provenance: From the Emerald Coast Collection. Earlier ex Fred Baldwin, May 23, 1963, to the following; our (Bowers and Merena's) sale of the Norweb Collection, Part II, March 1988, lot 2345; Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society; Heritage's sale of the Eric P. Newman Collection, Part IV, May 2014, lot 30306, as NGC VF-30 BN. PCGS# 42. NGC ID: AUAR.
