United States 1929 - Bremen Catapult Mail

One US airmail postal stationery cover carried on the first eastbound catapult flight from the liner Bremen, addressed to Frank Herget, care of Norddeutscher Lloyd, Bremerhaven, Germany. Graue K2b: US sea-post posting. Posted on 28 July 1929, as shown by the US German Sea Post cancellations. Carried aboard the Bremen on its return crossing from New York towards Europe, then forwarded ashore by the catapult-launched aircraft on 1 August 1929. The reverse bears the Bremerhaven arrival cancellation of 1 August 1929. The large red flight cachet reads “BREMEN. 2.8.1929”. This was the anticipated date incorporated into the cachet; the actual flight took place on 1 August. Additional registration number 12842 on the front. Correct total franking of 20 US cents for a first-weight-step letter: the envelope’s printed 5¢ airmail indicium, one additional 5¢ definitive stamp and two 5¢ Beacon airmail stamps. This corresponds to the 5¢ international letter rate plus the 15¢ catapult-service surcharge. The front also carries a colourful contemporary Norddeutscher Lloyd advertising label, inscribed “1929 – Die kommenden Grossbauten des Norddeutschen Lloyd Bremen”, depicting the prominent red bows of the liners Europa and Bremen. The design reproduces the shipping advertisement attributed to Bernd Steiner. This is a private promotional label without postal franking value. One cover, illustrated front and back. I can combine the shippings strictly following the Catawiki rules. Following a recent change in international sector regulations, specifically Articles 18 and 19 of the Universal Postal Convention, starting from January 1, 2026, it will no longer be possible to send items (goods with or without commercial value) using International Registered and International Insured services, which will continue to be used exclusively for sending documents.
