North America, United States, 1923 to 1953 CE. A mint United States stamp collection housed in a [Scott National] album, the stamps in black-backed protective mounts [never hinged / hinged]. Highlights include the 1923 16¢ dark blue Air Mail insignia (Scott C5) and the complete 1938 Presidential “Prexie” series (Scott 803 to 834), from the ½¢ Franklin through the $1 Wilson, $2 Harding, and $5 Coolidge. There are five souvenir sheets: the 1933 Century of Progress sheets of 25 (Scott 730 and 731), the 1934 APS Atlantic City Mt. Rainier sheet of 6 (Scott 750), the 1934 Trans-Mississippi Omaha Yosemite sheet of 6 (Scott 751), and the 1936 Third International Philatelic Exhibition sheet (Scott 778). The 1934 National Parks appear in both the perforated issue and the 1935 “Farley” special printing imperforates. Also included are the 1924 Huguenot-Walloon 1¢ and 5¢, the 1926 to 1927 map and 1927 Lindbergh airmails, the complete 1932 Washington Bicentennial set, the 1936 to 1937 Army and Navy issues, the 1940 National Defense set, the 1941 to 1944 Transport airmails, the 1949 UPU airmails, the 1952 Hawaii 80¢ airmail, and many state, anniversary, and commemorative issues of the 1920s to 1950s. Scott Stamp & Coin Co. was founded by John Walter Scott, a New York dealer who began publishing stamp price lists in the 1860s. Its catalogue numbers became the standard reference for United States stamps. The small numbers in parentheses under each space in this album, such as (146), (148), (599), and (601), are those catalogue numbers. Collectors can use them to look up each stamp and to see which spaces are still open. The pages also mark the technical details that separate one stamp from another. "Without Grill" refers to the small pattern of pressed dots that the Post Office added to stamps in the late 1860s. The grill helped canceling ink soak into the paper, which made it harder to wash off and reuse a stamp. Stamps that look the same can be different catalogue numbers depending on whether they have a grill. In the same way, the 1920s spaces are split by perforation size and by printing method (flat plate or rotary press). Coil stamps were sold in rolls for vending and affixing machines, so they are perforated on only two sides. A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids. Item # 199509
