Like a small sprig of flowers preserved for eternity, this extraordinary jabot brooch from the 1980s unfolds. In this type of jewelry, the long pin and its exquisitely crafted clasp remain visible and form part of the piece of jewellery’s visible design. The highlight of the design is a lush bouquet of cherry blossoms. It is carved from Pacific precious coral, whose delicately iridescent shades of rose lend each blossom its own vitality. The motif is reminiscent of the Japanese cherry blossom festival, Hanami. For centuries, people in Japan have gathered beneath the blossoming trees to celebrate the brief, overwhelming moment of their bloom. Sakura, the cherry blossom, symbolizes beauty, yet also the transience of all that is perfect: no sooner has the splendor of the blossoms unfolded than the wind carries their petals away. Hanging beneath the coral-colored sea of blossoms is a deep blue drop of lapis lazuli. Its almost nocturnal hue forms a beautiful contrast to the warm pink of the coral, and tiny diamonds adorn its golden setting like dewdrops. A bold anchor chain accompanies the long golden pin, emphasizing the playful elegance of the design. Even the detachable clasp at its lower end is crafted as a precious detail: a small sapphire glows within it like a secret blue speck of light. Thus, this modern interpretation of the classic jabot brooch combines Far Eastern nature poetry with the opulent colorfulness of the 1980s—a hanami of coral, gold, and gemstones.
