Unusual Retro Style Ring with Pearls and Rose Cut Diamond, c. 1930s

Two creamy white pearls shimmer in the center of this boat-shaped ring. They frame a large diamond rose of excellent quality. Small leaf ornaments in white gold enliven the ring, which is otherwise made of yellow gold. Together, they create a charming interplay of warmth and cool brilliance. But it is not just gemstones and metal that define the impression: small shadow spaces are created in the open-worked sections of the ring, turning the design into a lively composition of light and dark. The ring was created in the 1930s, a time when aesthetic sensibilities were undergoing major changes. While early Art Deco still had a preference for strict white gold and cool geometry, the need for warmth and fullness was now growing. Yellow gold returned to jewelry design, and with it a new delight in ornament and detail. In Germany, there was also a sentimental reminder of the Biedermeier period, which experienced a real renaissance in detailed forms. These trends are also reflected in this piece of jewellery. The goldsmith's work is richly decorated, but at the same time light and flexible in its expression. Finely curved spiral scrolls and floral forms echo historical styles such as Rococo and Biedermeier, but not in the sense of mere imitation; rather, they are reinterpreted, combining tradition and modernity. This ring is a fascinating companion that still surprises every time you look at it. It came to us from Munich.
