Scandinavian art pottery Identification of the piece Artist: Anna-Lisa Thomson (1905–1952). Manufacturer: Upsala-Ekeby (Uppsala, Sweden). Period: Circa 1940–1950. Category: Art pottery / Modernist earthenware. Dimensions and physical characteristics Height: 31 cm. Base diameter: 10 cm. Maximum circumference: 60 cm. Weight: 1.236 kg. This piece displays the typical density of Upsala-Ekeby’s chamotté clay. Manufacturing technique and decoration This earthenware work uses the manual sgraffito technique. The body is formed in textured raw clay, internally coated with a protective dark engobe. The surface decoration is achieved by manual incision, re-exposing the ochre clay beneath the dark layer to create vertical striations. The floral motif, consisting of stylized magnolias and orchids, is finished in a glossy cream glaze with bright orange details, providing a striking contrast to the matte clay. Markings and authentication The base bears the workshop’s authentic marks: the official Upsala-Ekeby logo featuring the heraldic tripod, the form number 17 stamped in the mass, as well as the initials ALT hand-engraved by Anna-Lisa Thomson. The two period protective pads are still present under the piece’s foot. In very good condition with no cracks Ultra-secure and careful shipping
