VAN GOGH (Vincent). — Letters from Vincent Van Gogh to Émile Bernard. Published by Ambroise Vollard. Paris, Ambroise Vollard, 6 Rue Laffitte, 1911. A quarto-sized volume, paperback, with a raised-relief cover printed in blue and orange, preserved in a brown paper slipcase. First edition of this important collection of letters written by Vincent Van Gogh to his friend, the painter Émile Bernard, published by the renowned art dealer Ambroise Vollard. This correspondence provides essential insight into Van Gogh’s artistic concepts, his reflections on color, composition, and drawing, as well as his relationships with the painters of his time. The volume is illustrated with reproductions of Van Gogh’s paintings and drawings, including landscapes and figure studies. This publication is particularly significant in the history of the dissemination of Van Gogh’s writings in France, coming a few years before his work gained international recognition. This copy shows foxing, soiling, and some signs of wear. The protective slipcase is worn.
