Victorian leather travel vanity case with silver hallmarked utensils, Birmingham ca. 1890-1900 Elegant Victorian travel vanity contained in a dark brown leather case with a stitched top handle and a lever metal closure. The interior unfolds into several folding panels revealing a complete collection of grooming and manicure tools with sterling silver handles, arranged on a tobacco-toned suede lining with individual securing compartments. The set includes scissors of various sizes, nail files, button hooks, an auxiliary hook, an instrument with a mother-of-pearl handle, a brush, and a carved crystal container with a silver cap, typical of high‑quality dressing sets from the late 19th century. All pieces are personalized with the interlaced monogram 'MR' engraved on the silver, especially visible on the crystal jar cap. The tool handles are made of sterling silver stamped with clearly identifiable British duty marks in macro detail: the crowned leopard head (London assay), the anchor (Birmingham assay), the passant lion (sterling silver hallmark), the date letter, and the maker's mark. The punches are consistent with the last decade of the 19th century. The crystal container features a carved body with geometric motifs and a hinged silver lid engraved with the monogram 'MR'. The case measures approximately 18 cm long, 6 cm high, and about 6 cm deep, with an interior suede lining that keeps each piece in its compartment. Condition: good for its age. The exterior leather shows generalized wear, crazing, loss of surface layer in areas, and usage marks, especially on edges and corners. The hardware closure remains functional with a used patina; 3 securing straps are loose. The set is complete as shown in the arrangement. One of the scissors has a slightly loose handle, but it can be restored without issue. Victorian vanity cases with sterling silver utensils are highly valued by collectors of dressing items, English silverware, and period memorabilia. Their value lies in the combination of leather craftsmanship, the quality of the punched silver, and the integrity of the set. The uniformly engraved monogram 'MR' across all pieces confirms that this is an original, personalized set for a single owner, adding character and increasing its historical and collectible interest. They are representative items of the refinement and social mobility of the well-to-do upper class of the late Victorian era.
