Vase - Glass

Satin glass vase 'Burmese' with a floral decoration Estimated age: Late 19th century (around 1885-1895) Materials: Opalescent colored glass (Burmese glass) Style: Victorian / Art Glass Origin: United States (Mount Washington Glass Company or Pairpoint) Historical significance: The 'Burmese' glass is famous for its unique color transition, shifting from pale yellow to delicate pink. It was particularly admired by Queen Victoria, which greatly contributed to its worldwide popularity during the Victorian era. The Burmese glass contains a small amount of uranium, which makes it glow with a lemon-green tint under ultraviolet (black) light. The Burmese glass formula was patented by Frederick Shirley in 1885. The name 'Burmese' was inspired by the sunset colors in the landscapes of Burma.
