Italy (attrib.) • Empoli Glasindustrie • Cobalt blue heavy vase from the luxury export line • Thick-walled mouth-blown cobalt blue glass • 1960s This large thick-walled vase with a flowing trumpet-shaped silhouette in intense cobalt blue is a fascinating example of the high-quality Italian glass art from the 1960s. While Empoli is worldwide known for its lighter decorative glass, specialized workshops in this region in the 1960s and 1970s also produced exclusive, solid production lines to compete with the Scandinavian market. The deep, saturated color and the heavy quality of the crystal-clear glass make this object a magnetic eye-catcher. The piece is distinguished by its impressive wall thickness and substantial weight of just over a kilo, a testament to the craftsmanship and technical mastery of the glassblowers. A superb opportunity for the true lover of powerful, architectural glass to add a unique masterpiece to their collection. The powerful form and the rich, dark tint of this piece create a dramatic visual effect in any room. When this vase is placed near a natural light source or on an illuminated pedestal, the cobalt blue glows with unprecedented intensity, ranging from mysterious dark sapphire to bright, sparkling blue. This piece adds a touch of refined presence to a sleek Mid-Century Modern interior, but it also forms a stunning contrasting anchor in a rich, eclectic decor. Dimensions: 24 x 12 x 12 cm Weight: 1170 grams Material: Thick-walled, mouth-blown cobalt blue glass Provenance: From a private collection, now in the possession of DECADERS Gallery. Condition: The vase is in excellent vintage condition. The underside bears the characteristic fused pontil mark from the glassblowing pipe, and there are light, authentic sliding marks visible on the broad footring, entirely appropriate to the age and historical character of the piece; see the pictures. That said, it in no way diminishes the decorative value of this exceptional art object; it also contributes to its character. Shipping: The object is packed with the utmost professionalism and care in double carton boxes with high-quality cushioning to ensure safe shipping. We always ship with an additional secure Track and Trace service. Be sure to check the feedback left by previously satisfied buyers. Biography and History: This vase is a representative example of the heavier export line from the Empoli region, a fascinating chapter in Italian glass history where ateliers such as Stelvia and Cristalleria Arno purposefully catered to the then-trend toward Scandinavian design. Whereas typical Empoli production was often characterized by thinner walls, this specific model testifies to a deliberate choice for massiveness and a pure form language that maximizes the optical depth of cobalt blue. The absence of a signature or sticker is common for this production period, as the focus was on the objective aesthetics and the artisanal quality of mouth-blown glass over direct branding. This type of object represents a highly sought-after niche within the mid-century design market, where the tactile and visual heft lends the piece a timeless character.
