A large pair of Japanese Satsuma vases - Maruni (丸二) - Japan - Early 20th century (Meiji/Taishō period) A beautiful and large fitting pair of antique Japanese Satsuma earthenware vases (baluster form) with a considerable height of 30 cm. The front of each vase is masterfully hand-painted with polychrome enamel and rich gold accents (moriage). The scene depicts elegant geisha in traditional kimonos in an idyllic landscape with cherry blossoms, a pagoda, and Mount Fuji. The reverse side shows a serene, continuous natural landscape with a gold pagoda, a wooden arched bridge, and stylized pine trees (matsu). The rims and feet are finished in a deep, rich cobalt blue (Gosu blue) with refined gold ornaments. The undersides bear the clear red, square studio mark of Maruni (丸二), accompanied by the Shimazu clan crest (a cross within a circle). One vase also bears a hand-applied maker's mark (+) on the unfired foot ring. One vase is in excellent condition with only light, age-related wear to the gilded fittings. The other vase has a clear, ongoing hairline in the bottom/basis (as clearly visible in the detail photo). The base is stable and the hairline does not affect the presentation quality of the pair from the front or rear. No chips, no restorations, and no missing parts.
