Rare set of 3 antique earthenware vases from Bouffioulx stoneware – Roger Guérin & Losson – Belgian ceramics – 20th century Three witnesses to Belgian ceramic heritage Superb set of three antique glazed stoneware vases from Bouffioulx, the famous Belgian pottery village, whose artisanal know-how has been a true tradition for several centuries. This lot brings together three distinctive pieces, two of which bear the signatures of the Roger Guérin and Losson workshops, names associated with Bouffioulx pottery history in the 20th century. The third vase bears an old potter’s mark, partially erased, which can also be linked to these productions. Beyond their decorative interest, these pieces bear witness to an era when Belgian potters combined traditional know-how, aesthetic exploration, and advertising commissions. A special story: the Belgian press and ceramics Two of the three vases have additional interest thanks to their relief decorations evoking old Belgian newspapers: - “Le Journal des Indépendants” - “Nouvelle Gazette” These inscriptions give the set a historically and commercially meaningful dimension. They evoke the relationships between pottery workshops and press companies, in a period when ceramic objects could also serve as promotional gifts, souvenirs, or advertising media. Thus, these vases are beautiful testimonies of artisanal heritage and the history of the Belgian press. Description of the three pieces 1. Vase signed Roger Guérin Elegant glazed stoneware vase with warm ochre and brown tones, highlighted by dark bands and a relief decoration “Le Journal des Indépendants.” It retains its old labels “Véritable grès de Bouffioulx” and “Hand Made Belgium,” additional elements testifying to its origin. Signature Roger Guérin under the base. Dimensions: - Height: about 24 cm - Diameter: about 10 cm - Weight: 1.273 kg 2. Vase signed Losson Beautiful glazed stoneware vase with beige, cream, and blue-gray nuances, featuring a relief decoration “Nouvelle Gazette.” Its balanced silhouette and glaze variations testify to the artisanal work of Bouffioulx potters. Signature Losson under the base. Dimensions: - Height: about 24 cm - Diameter: about 14 cm - Weight: 1.484 kg 3. Antique vase with potter’s mark Third glazed stoneware vase, displaying rich brown and blue-green tones. The base bears an old potter’s mark, now partially erased. Its attribution to the Guérin or Losson workshops is considered but cannot be established with certainty. This piece harmoniously completes the set with its colors and artisanal character. Dimensions: - Height: about 24 cm - Diameter: about 14 cm - Weight: 1.300 kg Condition Good overall condition for its age. Some small chips and signs of time are present, not detracting from the decorative character of the set. The photographs allow precise appreciation of the signatures, the mark, the old labels, and the condition of the three pieces. A set for collectors This lot offers several merits: - The presence of signatures of recognized Bouffioulx potters. - Old labels attesting to Belgian origin. - Advertising decorations related to the Belgian press. - The gathering of three pieces of similar dimensions. - The glazes and color variations characteristic of artisanal stoneware. - The testimony of traditional potter’s know-how. A particularly interesting set for collectors of Belgian ceramics, 20th-century stoneware enthusiasts, and lovers of antique advertising objects. Origin: Bouffioulx, Belgium. Estimated period: mid-20th century. Material: glazed stoneware. Number of pieces: 3. Height: about 24 cm each. Total weight: 4.057 kg excluding packaging.
