Verreries Doyen - Vase - FLORALIE - Glass, Amber glass - ART DECO - 1930s

Art Deco Amber Glass Vase – Verreries Doyen – Belgium, ca. 1930s No reserve price A beautiful and sculptural example of Belgian Art Deco glass, this elegant medium-sized vase was produced in the 1930s by Verreries Doyen in Havré-Ville (Mons), Belgium. Its unusual and relatively rare shape reflects the bold geometric aesthetic and refined craftsmanship characteristic of the Art Deco period. The vase is entirely hand-blown in gorgeous amber glass, displaying a delicate, honey-like colour with remarkable warmth and luminosity. Its sculptural silhouette features a succession of geometric curves, stepped contours and softly undulating surfaces, creating a fascinating interplay of light, transparency and form. One of the most captivating qualities of this piece is the way the glass interacts with natural light. As sunlight passes through its curved surfaces, the refraction and optical distortion create beautiful variations of golden yellow, warm honey, deep amber and rich cognac tones. The vase seems to come alive in the light, casting luminous reflections and creating an almost liquid effect within the glass. Entirely handmade, the vase may display subtle irregularities, tiny air bubbles or other natural imperfections resulting from the traditional glassblowing process. These are characteristic of authentic handmade glass and contribute to the individuality and charm of the piece. Its unusual proportions and striking architectural silhouette make it an especially decorative example of 1930s Belgian glassmaking. A sophisticated and versatile decorative object, equally beautiful with a floral arrangement or displayed on its own. Its warm amber colour and sculptural Art Deco design make it a wonderful accent for a contemporary minimalist interior, where natural sunlight can fully reveal the extraordinary beauty of the glass. In the early 20th century, Jean-Baptiste Doyen and his son Gaston established a glass factory in Havré-Ville, near Mons, Belgium. Originally named Verreries Gobeleteries d’Havré-Ville, the company specialized in producing high-quality blown glassware, including tableware, lighting, and decorative pieces. Doyen’s work became particularly renowned for its Art Deco designs, featuring elegant shapes, refined engravings, and meticulous craftsmanship. A notable example is a set of mouth-blown glasses adorned with finely scoured olive shapes and intricate fan patterns, showcasing the exquisite attention to detail of the era. Among Doyen’s most celebrated creations is the “Floralies” series, which embodies the refined elegance of Art Deco design. Produced in the early 20th century, these vases are distinguished by their bold geometric forms, intricate detailing, and rich, vibrant colors. One of the most remarkable models, no. 150, crafted in the 1930s, features striking vertical stripes and a distinctive corrugated collar, often produced in warm brown glass. Many pieces from the series still bear the “Floralies” label, preserving their legacy and making them easily recognizable among collectors. Today, Doyen’s glassware remains highly sought after by enthusiasts and collectors of Belgian Art Deco pieces. Their timeless elegance and historical significance continue to make them prized additions to vintage collections, standing as a testament to Belgium’s rich glassmaking tradition and artistic heritage.
