Verreries Doyen - Vase - FLORALIE - Glass, Hyalite glass - ART DECO - 1930s

Doyen Art Deco Black Hyalite Glass Vase — Floralie Series, Belgium, 1930s A striking and highly decorative Belgian Art Deco vase, produced by the Doyen glassworks in Havré-Ville (Mons), Belgium, during the 1930s. The vase is made of black hyalite glass, a distinctive type of glass characterised by its deep, almost completely opaque black appearance and beautifully polished, reflective surface. To achieve this effect, hyalite glass was produced with relatively thick walls, allowing the dark glass to absorb light and create the impression of solid black glass. Under strong illumination, subtle traces of its underlying translucency may become visible. The vase features Doyen’s distinctive “Betterave” (Beetroot) form, characterised by its generous rounded body, narrowing neck and gently flared rim. The lower part is decorated with a succession of pronounced horizontal moulded rings, creating a rhythmic contrast with the smooth, rounded upper body. The combination of its bold sculptural silhouette, restrained geometric decoration and intense glossy black finish perfectly reflects the sophisticated aesthetic of the Art Deco period. This form is also documented in the reference publication Verre et Noir by Éliane and Léopold Engen. An amethyst-coloured example bearing the original Floralie label is illustrated in the book and identified as Doyen. The documented vase is described as having vertical Venetian-style mouldings and horizontal mouldings around its lower section. Standing approximately 25 cm high, the vase has a substantial yet elegant presence. Its architectural silhouette and dramatic black colour make it particularly suitable for modern, minimalist or contemporary interiors, where it can serve as a striking sculptural accent. The vase is in good vintage condition, with some minor superficial scratches and light signs of use, consistent with its age and visible in the photographs. These do not detract from its overall decorative appeal. A refined example of Belgian Art Deco glass, combining Doyen’s characteristic “Betterave” form, the distinctive beauty of black hyalite glass and the timeless elegance of 1930s geometric design. In the early 20th century, Jean-Baptiste Doyen and his son Gaston established a glass factory in Havré-Ville, near Mons, Belgium. Originally named Verreries Gobeleteries d’Havré-Ville, the company specialized in producing high-quality blown glassware, including tableware, lighting, and decorative pieces. Doyen’s work became particularly renowned for its Art Deco designs, featuring elegant shapes, refined engravings, and meticulous craftsmanship. A notable example is a set of mouth-blown glasses adorned with finely scoured olive shapes and intricate fan patterns, showcasing the exquisite attention to detail of the era. Among Doyen’s most celebrated creations is the “Floralies” series, which embodies the refined elegance of Art Deco design. Produced in the early 20th century, these vases are distinguished by their bold geometric forms, intricate detailing, and rich, vibrant colors. One of the most remarkable models, no. 150, crafted in the 1930s, features striking vertical stripes and a distinctive corrugated collar, often produced in warm brown glass. Many pieces from the series still bear the “Floralies” label, preserving their legacy and making them easily recognizable among collectors. Today, Doyen’s glassware remains highly sought after by enthusiasts and collectors of Belgian Art Deco pieces. Their timeless elegance and historical significance continue to make them prized additions to vintage collections, standing as a testament to Belgium’s rich glassmaking tradition and artistic heritage. Will be well packaged, protected and insured
