Verreries Doyen - Vase - Glass, Hyalite glass - ART DECO - 1930s

Doyen Art Deco Black Hyalite Glass Vase — Floralie Series, Belgium, 1930s An elegant and highly decorative Belgian Art Deco vase produced by the Doyen glassworks in Havré-Ville (Mons), Belgium, during the 1930s. The vase is made of black hyalite glass, distinguished by its deep, almost opaque black colour and beautifully polished, mirror-like surface. Its generous rounded body, gently sloping shoulders and short, narrow neck create a beautifully balanced sculptural silhouette. The smooth curves, minimalist geometry and intense glossy black finish perfectly reflect the sophisticated aesthetic of the Art Deco period. Despite being nearly a century old, the vase has a remarkably contemporary appearance, making it an ideal decorative accent for modern, minimalist or mid-century interiors. It can be displayed either with flowers or as a striking sculptural object in its own right. The vase is in good vintage condition, with minor signs of age and use. Small bubbles or subtle irregularities may be present as a natural result of traditional glassmaking techniques, reflecting the craftsmanship and authenticity of the period. A beautiful example of 1930s Belgian Art Deco glass, combining the dramatic elegance of black hyalite with timeless sculptural simplicity. In the early 20th century, Jean-Baptiste Doyen and his son Gaston established a glass factory in Havré-Ville, near Mons, Belgium. Originally named Verreries Gobeleteries d’Havré-Ville, the company specialized in producing high-quality blown glassware, including tableware, lighting, and decorative pieces. Doyen’s work became particularly renowned for its Art Deco designs, featuring elegant shapes, refined engravings, and meticulous craftsmanship. A notable example is a set of mouth-blown glasses adorned with finely scoured olive shapes and intricate fan patterns, showcasing the exquisite attention to detail of the era. Among Doyen’s most celebrated creations is the “Floralies” series, which embodies the refined elegance of Art Deco design. Produced in the early 20th century, these vases are distinguished by their bold geometric forms, intricate detailing, and rich, vibrant colors. One of the most remarkable models, no. 150, crafted in the 1930s, features striking vertical stripes and a distinctive corrugated collar, often produced in warm brown glass. Many pieces from the series still bear the “Floralies” label, preserving their legacy and making them easily recognizable among collectors. Today, Doyen’s glassware remains highly sought after by enthusiasts and collectors of Belgian Art Deco pieces. Their timeless elegance and historical significance continue to make them prized additions to vintage collections, standing as a testament to Belgium’s rich glassmaking tradition and artistic heritage.
