Vessel - Ghana

19th Century Asante (Ashanti) Kuduo – Ceremonial Brass Vessel with Chief & Court Scene – Ghana Impressive and richly detailed Asante (Ashanti) Kuduo ceremonial vessel from Ghana, West Africa, attributed to the 19th century. The vessel is made of brass/bronze alloy using the traditional lost-wax casting technique (cire perdue). With a height of approximately 27 cm and a substantial weight of approximately 1.8 kg, this is a large and exceptionally elaborate example of this distinctive form of West African metalwork. The removable lid is conceived as an elaborate three-dimensional court scene. At its centre sits a ruler or high-ranking chief beneath a large ceremonial parasol, surrounded by several attendants and figures carrying different attributes. Within Asante court culture, such parasols were important visual symbols associated with chiefly authority, prestige and social rank. Particularly striking is the complexity of the composition. Numerous individually modelled figures are arranged around the central person, creating an almost miniature sculptural representation of court life. The body of the Kuduo is equally richly decorated. Its surface features extensive geometric incised and cross-hatched patterns, raised ornamental bands, applied birds and human figures, as well as additional sculptural elements extending from the sides. The vessel rests upon an unusual openwork circular pedestal, further enhancing its sculptural appearance. Cultural significance Kuduo vessels are an important and distinctive form of traditional Akan/Asante metalwork. Historically, such vessels were used for keeping valuable possessions and significant substances, including gold dust, and could also acquire ceremonial and ritual importance. Their decoration was not merely ornamental. Figural compositions could communicate ideas of status, authority, hierarchy and courtly life, making elaborate examples particularly fascinating documents of Asante material culture. Technique The piece was produced using the traditional cire perdue or lost-wax process, historically employed by Akan metalworkers. This technique allows complex three-dimensional forms to be created and is particularly well demonstrated here by the numerous freestanding figures, delicate limbs, openwork elements, applied ornaments and intricate surface decoration. The irregularities visible throughout the casting are characteristic of an individually produced, handmade object and contribute greatly to its individual character. Condition The vessel presents an attractive aged surface with varying golden-brown, dark brown and almost black patination, together with deposits, oxidation, casting irregularities and traces of age and use. There are various irregularities, losses/damage and fragile areas to the elaborate figural and openwork decoration, consistent with the nature and age of such a complex object. Please examine all photographs carefully, as they form an important part of the condition description. The figural lid is removable, revealing the interior of the vessel.
