Vibrant Nupe Agaie Wood Stool w/ Animal Symbols

West Africa, Nigeria, Nupe culture, ca. mid-20th century CE. A charming and colorful hand-carved wooden stool with six tapered legs, adorned in bold polychrome pigment. Both the legs and the oval seat are decorated with painted motifs, including stylized animals such as scorpions, fish, lizards, and chameleons, as well as geometric designs and floral elements. The seat is also incised "AGAIE" - the name of a prominent Nupe town - suggesting it may have been produced for sale. The vibrant palette - featuring red, yellow, blue, black, and white - adds striking visual energy to the functional form. Such stools were traditionally used in both daily life and ceremonial contexts. Size: 14" L x 11.5" W x 10.5" H (35.6 cm x 29.2 cm x 26.7 cm) Item # 193553
