Victor Hugo - Notre-Dame de Paris - 1900

A fascinating illustrated edition of one of the great historical novels of 19th-century French literature and a major work of Romanticism, in which the writer combines a tragic plot with a broad evocation of medieval Paris, its monuments, its people, and its social upheavals - The action takes place mainly in 1482, under the reign of Louis XI, in a capital still deeply marked by the structures, beliefs and institutions of the Middle Ages, while Notre-Dame Cathedral towers over the city as an immense architectural, religious and historical symbol - At the center of the tale is Esmeralda, a young beautiful Gypsy dancer, whose presence in the streets of Paris draws gaze, passions and desires, but who also becomes the victim of prejudice and persecution - Victor Hugo - Notre-Dame de Paris - SD (Circa 1900) - Good condition of the binding, the volume in its original half-leather, marbled boards, signs of wear, a few minor defects on the cover, foxing on the edges, worn corners, speckled edges, spine with fine raised bands, gilded titling and author’s name, gilded lines on the boards - Good interior condition, paper uniformly browned, pretty headbands, beautiful drop cap, text framed, the work enriched with fine black-and-white engravings in and out of text, marbled endpapers in good condition, a pleasant copy - Delivery service guaranteed within a few days -
