Pieces of jewellery crafted in yellow gold and studded all over with seed pearls were particularly popular in Great Britain around 1900. Brooches and necklaces in floral shapes were particularly popular. This brooch is also a floral arrangement. A central blossom is flanked by several leaves. A small old-cut diamond sparkles in the center of the blossom. The rest of the brooch is completely set with pearls. Pearls were already highly coveted as pieces of jewellery by the ancient Greeks and Romans: the Greek term margarita was also used to refer to the beloved, a term that has survived to this day in the name Margarete. So pearl jewelry is just as much a part of a beloved lady's jewelry box today as it was in the Victorian era! A glance at the back of the brooch reveals that it was created in earlier times from three elements of a bracelet or necklace. We discovered the brooch as it is here in Berlin.
