Victorian pendant brooch with diamond & pearls in gold, circa 1900

Jewellery in the form of celestial bodies enjoyed great popularity in the last third of the 19th century. Moons, stars and suns richly studded with diamonds adorned the corsages of ball gowns and sparkled in the hair. Who doesn't immediately think of the legendary portrait of Sisi, painted by Winterhalter, which shows the young empress with a multitude of such jewels in her dark hair? This example was created during this fashion. Made entirely of yellow gold, it is designed as a star with eight points. The surface of the piece of jewelry is set with softly shimmering natural pearls. Small leaves are set between the points of the star and hold further small pearls to enhance the magnificent impression. A beautiful old-cut diamond sparkles in the center of the composition. We were able to acquire this beautiful piece of jewelry in the north of England. Its characteristic design shows that it was also created in Great Britain. It can be worn both as a pendant and as a brooch. An enclosed, original brooch can be screwed on for this purpose.
