Culture: Viking Era Period: 9th–12th century AD Material: Bronze (copper alloy) Dimensions: 50 × 40 mm An interesting early medieval bronze openwork pendant, attributed to the Viking Era and associated with the cultural traditions of Medieval Rus. The pendant features an unusual circular design, consisting of a central ring surrounded by four interconnected circular elements, forming a distinctive cross-shaped composition within a larger circular frame. An integral suspension loop at the top allowed the ornament to be worn as a pendant. Both sides display the same geometric openwork pattern, reflecting the symmetrical design and craftsmanship of the piece. Circular and cruciform ornaments were known throughout early medieval Eastern Europe, particularly within the cultural sphere of Medieval Rus, where Scandinavian, Slavic, Byzantine and Finno-Ugric traditions interacted. The combination of circular and cross-shaped elements may have carried symbolic or protective significance, possibly reflecting religious or traditional beliefs of the period. Its precise meaning remains uncertain. The pendant displays an attractive green patina with areas of darker brown corrosion and visible signs of age. An unusual example of bronze openwork ornamentation, reflecting the rich artistic traditions of medieval Eastern Europe. Condition: Good archaeological condition, with age-related surface wear and patination. The openwork design is well preserved and clearly visible on both sides.
