Vintage Clip-On Earrings with Sapphire Cabochons and Cultured Pearls

Jewellery fashions of the 1990s favored clean lines and vividly colored gemstones set in rich gold. The cabochon, in particular, experienced a renaissance during this period: sapphires, rubies, and emeralds cut as cabochons were highly prized for their colour and gently domed surfaces and were used in necklaces and bracelets, often in combination. These elegant ear clips are a quintessential example of 1990s cabochon style. At the center are two oval sapphires that together weigh approximately 6.00 ct. Their iridescent play of colours, shifting between blue and violet, is particularly effectively highlighted by the gold setting, which follows the shape of the gemstones. Wide, sculpturally rounded frames made of 14-karat gold surround the stones and give the ear clips a powerful presence, so typical of high-quality jewellery from the 1990s. The two movably suspended white cultured pearls in a teardrop shape provide a shimmering counterpoint to the gemstones. The earrings are designed as clips, but we can easily add a post if you’d like to wear them as studs. This elegant pair found its way to us from Hanover.
