For thousands of years, the emerald has been one of the most highly prized gemstones. Pliny the Elder wrote about it in 77 AD: "When the eyes are weakened, they are strengthened again by looking at the emerald. The stone's soft green colour dispels languour". Nero, for example, is said to have worn an emerald as a monocle to strengthen his eyes, and Cleopatra is also said to have enhanced her beauty and youth by wearing emeralds. The emerald adorning this vintage ring also appears to be animated by an inner green fire. The gemstone, which probably originates from Africa, is shaped in a classic navette cut and is held by delicate prongs. A ring of brilliant-cut white diamonds sets the perfect stage for the stone. Together, they weigh around 0.72 ct. The ring made of high-carat yellow gold was crafted in France around 1985 and came to us from Düsseldorf. The quality of the emerald and the diamonds have been analysed by an independent laboratory in Idar-Oberstein.
