There are some design ideas in the field of jewellery that have been encountered at all times, yet have been given new life in every generation. One of these classic themes is the so-called "entourage ring". A large coloured gemstone is surrounded by a frame of smaller diamonds. Basically a simple idea - but how different the resulting pieces of jewellery can look! This ring from the economic miracle era features a large, shining sapphire at its center. The stone is very clear, weighs 3.25 ct and is cut in the so-called antique shape, i.e. as a cushion with slightly rounded sides. The stone, most likely from Ceylon, now Sri Lanka, is very clear and has a uniform, sky-blue colour. Very delicate inclusions, barely visible without a magnifying glass, prove that it is untreated. It has therefore not been heated to improve its colour, which is a sign of its special quality. The ring surrounds the sapphire with brilliant-cut diamonds set in white gold. The settings follow the round shape of the diamonds, so that the layer of diamonds looks like a flower, slightly playful and moving, almost like a doily. The layer underneath is made of yellow gold and follows the shape of the sapphire. The design is thus calmed down again, while at the same time the ring appears solid and powerful thanks to the slight staggering of the materials. This reflects the taste of the post-war period, when jewellery was once again intended to appear more solid and powerful than in the pre-war era. We discovered the ring here in Berlin. It is in very good condition. We had the sapphire polished by our gemstone cutter. An independent expert opinion has confirmed the quality of the materials.
