All auctions / Arts & Graphics / Virgin with Cherubs. Circle of Scipione Pulzone. 16th century.

Descriptio Oil on octagonal panel. Dimensions: 55 x 45 cm. The face of the Virgin, with its serene and melancholic gaze, stands out for its classicist idealization and the soft modeling of its volumes. Framed by a radiant halo on a gold background, the figure is presented wearing the traditional blue cloak and red tunic, elements associated with Marian iconography. On either side, discreet cherubs emerge in low relief, suggesting an enveloping spiritual plane. The delicate treatment of the face, with thin lips, straight nose, and introspective gaze, is associated with the style of the circle of Scipione Pulzone, an Italian Mannerist painter active in the late Cinquecento. The reduced palette and emotional restraint reveal a reclusive spirituality, typical of post-Tridentine devotional representations. The work combines formal elegance and symbolic depth, constituting a refined example of Marian worship in Italian religious painting. Due to its age and history of use, this lot may show signs of wear and previous interventions. Unless explicitly stated otherwise, no specialized technical testing has been performed. The absence of any mention of restorations does not guarantee that none exist. You may request additional information before placing a bid. This does not affect the buyer’s statutory rights.
