"The Newcomes: Memoirs of a Most Respectable Family" by W.M. Thackeray (written under pseudonym of Arthur Pendennis) - Bradbury & Evans, London - 1854-1855 first UK edition (first issue point in bookform) - complete in two volumes - 18cmx15cm - condition: good, rebound in half leather binding, with some wear and rubbing to boards, complete with forty-six plates and many in text illustrations by Punch magazine Victorian artist Richard Doyle, some page staining and foxing Edited by "Arthur Pendennis", a protagonist in another novel by Thackeray, who is also the narrator to this story. This novel tells the story of the Newcome family as they rise into wealth and respectability and start marrying into the minor aristocracy. Interestingly, Thackeray uses the coined word 'capitalism' as reference for an economic system for the first time in this novel.
